Prayer (Salah) is Allah’s most favorite form of worship. It creates a direct connection between the Lord and His slave. Offering the five daily prayers every day is an act of loving Allah Almighty not on your own terms but on His.

The daily prayers essentially make up the very backbone of what it means to be a Muslim – it keeps us high in faith every single day. Hence, every Muslim must incorporate the five daily prayers in his/her everyday life. 

Prayer was not ordained by Allah Almighty to burden mankind, but was introduced to serve as a means to help and guide them. It is through Prayer that a person develops a solid relationship with Allah Almighty, which goes beyond just words and oaths. 

It was narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) declare that Allah the Exalted had said: “I have divided the prayer into two halves between Me and My servant, and My servant will receive what he asks. When the servant says: Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the universe, Allah the Most High says: My servant has praised Me. And when he (the servant) says: The Most Compassionate, the Merciful, Allah the Most High says: My servant has lauded Me. And when he (the servant) says: Master of the Day of judgment, He remarks: My servant has glorified Me. and sometimes He would say: My servant entrusted (his affairs) to Me. And when he (the worshiper) says: Thee do we worship and of Thee do we ask help, He (Allah) says: This is between Me and My servant, and My servant will receive what he asks for. Then, when he (the worshiper) says: Guide us to the straight path, the path of those to whom Thou hast been Gracious not of those who have incurred Thy displeasure, nor of those who have gone astray, He (Allah) says: This is for My servant, and My servant will receive what he asks for.” (Muslim

There are many virtues of praying regularly:

1- Prayer is one of the most virtues acts in Islam, and most beloved to Almighty Allah.

It was narrated that `Abdullah ibn `Amr said: “The Messenger of Allah said: ‘Adhere to righteousness even though you will not be able to do all acts of virtue. Know that among the best of your deeds is prayer and that no one maintains his ablution except a believer.’” (Ibn Majah)

2- Prayer prevents immoral sins and evil deeds:

Almighty Allah says,

And establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing. (Al-`Ankabut 29:45)

3- Prayer expiates sins:

Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) reported: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, “The similitude of the five (obligatory) Prayer is like a river running at the door of one of you in which he takes a bath five times a day.” (Muslim)

Abu Hurairah reported: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “The five daily (prescribed) Prayer, and Friday (prayer) to the next Friday (prayer), and the fasting of Ramadan to the next Ramadan, is expiation of the sins committed in between them, so long as major sins are avoided.” (Muslim)

4- Guarding prayer is light, proof, and salvation:

Abdullah ibn `Amr reported: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Whoever guards his prayers will have light, proof, and salvation on the Day of Resurrection. Whoever does not guard his prayers will not have light, nor proof, nor salvation. On the Day of Resurrection, he will be with Qarun, Pharaoh, Haman, and Ubay ibn Khalaf.” (Musnad Ahmad)

5- Prayer elevates one’s ranks and expiates sins:

Thauban (May Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) saying, “Perform Salah more often. For every prostration that you perform before Allah will raise your position one degree and will remit one of your sins”. (Muslim)

6- It rescues from Hell, protects against danger, and enables a person to win Paradise:

It was narrated that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “The one who prays before sunrise (Fajr prayer) and before sunset (`Asr prayer) will not enter Hell Fire.” (Muslim)

It is customary for kings to promise reward and nearness to those whom they are pleased with. The  magicians said to Pharaoh,

“Is there indeed for us a reward if we are predominant?” (Ash-Shu`ara 26: 41)

and he answered that they would be rewarded and be among those near to him, saying:

“Yes, and, [moreover], you will be among those made near [to me].” (Al-A`raf 7: 114)

The example of the first type is like a man who entered the abode of the king but was unable to gain entrance to him as there was a barrier standing between him and the king, hence he was unable to see him or gain access to this person.

The barrier is an embodiment of his desires and lusts as well as the smoke screen of his hopeful wishes in this life; his heart is sick and his self is wrapped up in what it desires wanting only its immediate share in this life.

It is for these reasons that all the while they pray they are in an unhappy state wherein they are not only unable to obtain any comfort, but are also empty of feelings of fear and hope in Allah, which makes prayer a suffering for them that only ceases when they finish praying, as only then are they able to return to that in which they find their comfort (i.e. worldly affairs and pleasures).

The example of the second type is like a man who entered the house of the king upon which the barrier screening him from the king is removed; thus he is able to find delight in looking at the king and being at his service and in his obedience. In return, the king lavishes upon him every form of grace and brings him near to himself.

For all these reasons, he is unable to bear leaving the house and wishes to remain standing before him to enjoy the sweetness of being close to him, the tranquility that he experiences from it, and being held in esteem by Allah while he basks in His good Words (i.e. Qur’an).

He also enjoys being in such a state of humbleness and humility before Him, for which he invokes Him more and more while he is being showered with His graces from every direction, not to mention the calmness that his soul experiences while his heart and limbs are fully attentive to his Lord. He is pleased and comfortable, worshiping Allah as if he sees Him, for He manifests Himself to him through His Words (i.e. Qur’an).

It should thus come as no surprise that the most distressing thing for him is to have to leave all that (i.e. conclude the Salah). And Allah is the Guide and the Helper.

  • O You who have abandoned the prayer, what is left of your Islam after you have abandoned them?! Do not you know that it is the backbone of Islam and an indication of your belief?!
  • You who have abandoned prayers! All creatures prostrate to Allah except for you, while Allah Almighty says:

“See you not that whoever is in the heavens and whoever is on the earth, the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the trees, Ad-Dawab [moving (living) creatures, beasts], and many of mankind prostrate themselves to Allah?! But there are many (men) on whom the punishment is justified.” (Al-Hajj: 18)

If you do not pray, then you will be among those on whom the punishment is justified.

  • O you who have abandoned prayers! Do not you know that abandoning it is an act of disbelief, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “The pledge between us and them  is (expressed by their performance of) the prayer; whosoever abandons it has disbelieved.” (Ahmad)

  • O you who have abandoned prayers! Do not you know that slackening in it is a form of hypocrisy?! Allah says:

Indeed, the hypocrites [think to] deceive Allah, but He is deceiving them. And when they stand for prayer, they stand lazily, showing [themselves to] the people and not remembering Allah except a little.” (An-Nisa’: 142)

Do you not see that the hypocrites during the time of the Prophet (peace be upon him) would pray, although to be seen, while you don’t pray at all?!

  • O you who have abandoned prayers! Do not you know that abandoning it causes heedlessness and hardness of the heart, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Let  the people stop abandoning the Friday prayer, or else Allah will surely seal their hearts, and they will become of the heedless.”” (Muslim)
  • O you who have abandoned prayers! Do not you know that this leads to the punishment in Hell, as Allah says:

[And asking them], “What put you into Saqar? They will say, “We were not of those who prayed. (Al-Muddaththir: 42-43)

  • O you who have abandoned prayers! Do not you know that abandoning it causes worry, disorder and a difficult life, Allah says:

And whoever turns away from My remembrance – indeed, he will have a depressed life, and We will gather him on the Day of Resurrection blind.” He will say, “My Lord, why have you raised me blind while I was [once] seeing?” [ Allah ] will say, “Thus did Our signs come to you, and you forgot them; and thus will you this Day be forgotten.” (Ta-ha: 124-126)

What a pity and a waste! How is it that the years of your life are passing, and your heart is veiled from worshiping Allah; how can you depart this life and you did not taste the best of it?! Indeed the best of this life is worshiping Allah, mentioning Him and expressing your gratitude to Him.

  • O you who have abandoned prayers! What remains to be important to you in your religion if you give no importance to your prayer? Do not you know that one who abandons prayer finds it easier to abandon other acts of worship?!

Repent, O heedless one, to Allah, before death comes to you while you have abandoned the prayer.

O you who have slackened in your prayer!!

What are you going to do after you learned about the great virtues of prayer?

What are you going to do after knowing the abundant awards set for those who pray?

What are you going to do after you learned about the punishment awaiting those who abandon it?

Are you going to continue slighting and neglecting your prayer?

Will you still insist to sleep through your prayers or delay them after their prescribed times?

Dear brother! Where is your ambition? Where is your strong determination? Where is your readiness for Paradise? Where is your adherence to the prescribed timings for prayers? Where is your early arrival for the Friday and congregational prayers?

The Fruits and Virtues of Prayer

1- It was prescribed in the heavens the night the Prophet (peace be upon him) ascended to the heavens, while the commands for the remaining acts of worship were revealed to the Prophet (peace be upon him) on earth. This indicates its great importance, sacredness and status.

2- It is the only pillar which is repeated five times each day, and it is never waved except for a woman experiencing her menstrual period or post partum bleeding.

3- It is the one of the most virtuous and most beloved of deeds to Allah as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “…know that the best of your deeds is the prayer, and only a true believer maintains the state of ablution.” (Ahmad)

4- It is the backbone of Islam, and brings pleasure to the eyes of pious. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “The most important of all matters is Islam, its backbone is the prayer, and its highest level is Jihad for the sake of Allah.” (Ahmad)

5- It is a proof of one’s Islam, a sign of belief, and it preserves a person’s blood from being shed. Allah says what means “But if they repent [by rejecting Shirk (polytheism) and accept Islamic Monotheism], perform Prayer (Iqamat-as- Salat) and give Zakat, then they are your brethren in religion.” (At-Tawbah: 2)

6- It is a sign of honesty and frees a person from hypocrisy. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Whosoever prays forty days with the congregation, attending the initial (Allahu Akbar) of the prayer will be free of two things: Hellfire and hypocrisy.” (Ahmad)

7- It is the best issue to be occupied with, the most profitable business, and the most likely amongst all acts of worship to cause a person to become humble and submissive. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Prayer is the best thing to be occupied with, so whoever is able to perform much of it then let him do so.” (Ahmad)

8- It is a command from Allah, an advice of the Prophet (peace be upon him), and a feature which distinguishes the people of Islam and faith. Allah Almighty says what means, “Guard strictly (five obligatory) As- Salawat (the prayers) and stand before Allah with obedience.” (Al-Baqarah: 238)

9- It elevates the ranks and expiates sins, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Tell me, if there were a river in front of one’s house in which he would bath five times a day, would any dirt remain on him? They said: “No dirt will remain on him.” He then said, “That is the example of the five daily obligatory prayers, for through them Allah erases sins.” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

10- It secures one from the Hellfire, protects against danger, and makes a person win Paradise. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “The one who prays before sunrise (Fajr prayer) and before sunset (`Asr prayer) will not enter the Hellfire.” (Muslim)

11- It is a sign for success and victory and an indication of being accepted. Allah Almighty says, “Successful indeed are the believers. Those who offer their Salat (prayers) with all solemnity and full submissiveness,” (Al- Mu’minun: l-2) and also, “…and those who strictly guard their (five compulsory congregational) Salawat (prayers) (at their fixed stated hours). These are indeed the inheritors. Who shall inherit the Firdaus (Paradise). They shall dwell therein forever.” (Al-Mu’minun: 9-11)

12- It is the first thing for which the slave will be held accountable. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “The first thing for which the slave will be held accountable for on the day of Resurrection is his prayer; if it is good (by performing it properly and on time), then the rest of his deeds will be good, and if it is ruined (by neglecting it), then the rest of his deeds will be ruined.” (At-Tabarani)

13- It is a provision for the way, a comfort for the soul and body, a light for the heart, purification for the soul and a sign for salvation. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “O Bilal! Call the Iqamah! Bring us comfort by it!” (Ahmad and Abu Dawud)

14- It frustrates Satan and the disbelievers. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “When the son of Adam recites a verse which recommends him to prostrate and he does, Satan starts crying and says, ‘Woe to me, the son of Adam followed what he was commanded and he will get Paradise as a reward, while I was commanded to prostrate and refused and will enter Hell.” (Muslim)

15- It is a form of expressing appreciation and gratitude, as well as being a treasure full of magnification of Allah glorification and praise of Him. When the Prophet (peace be upon him) was asked about the reason behind his excessive prayer, he (peace be upon him) said, “Shouldn’t I be a thankful slave?!” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

16- It protects against following desires, evil sins and cures from sicknesses, as Allah says, “Verily, As-Salat (the prayer) prevents from Al-Fahsha‘ (i.e. great sins of every kind, unlawful sexual intercourse) and Al-Munkar (i.e. disbelief, polytheism, and every kind of evil wicked deed)” (Al-`Ankabut: 45).

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “Pray the optional night prayer, for it is the way of righteous before you; it brings you close to your Lord, prevents you from committing sins, expiates your sins and cures you from sicknesses.” (At-Tirmithi)

The Secret of Prayer Lies in Devotion to Allah

The secret and the essence of Salah (prayer) is to devote oneself to Allah while praying. Just as the `abd (slave)  should not turn his face away from the direction of the Qiblah (direction of prayer), he should also disallow his heart from giving attention to anything except his Lord. Therefore the salve should let the Ka`bah – the House of Allah – be the direction of his body and face, and let Allah be the direction of his heart and soul. Allah shall give His attention to His slave in proportion to the level of his devotion and focus in Prayer. Thus, if he turns away from Allah (by becoming unmindful), He too shall turn away from him – truly, as you judge, shall you yourself be judged.

Devotion in Prayer is of three levels:

1- The devotion of the heart: This level safeguards the heart and rectifies its affairs from the sickness of desires and the whispers of Satan, as well as all thoughts that may nullify his Prayer or lessen its reward.

2- The devotion of Ihsan: This level is when the slave is mindful of Allah in his prayer to the degree that he becomes as if he worships Him while seeing Him.

3- The devotion of understanding: This level is reached when the slave reflects upon and comprehends the meanings of the words of Allah (i.e. Qur’an) that he recites. And, when he contemplates the details of the worship (i.e. prayer) in order to pay its due right in humility and tranquility. Even if we ponder about Surat Al-Fatihah, there is so much to think and ponder about that one can get overwhelmed. Scholars have explained seven different levels of understanding of this surah and written volumes and volumes of books on this surah alone. If this one surah requires this much pondering, then how about the whole Qur’an and what Allah Almighty has legislated for us to recite in our prayer.

If the slave successfully reaches these three levels, he will have truly established and performed his prayer in the most perfect manner and in return, he will receive the full attention of Allah.

Almighty Allah says on the Quran:

And He has made me blessed wherever I am and has enjoined upon me prayer and zakah as long as I remain alive. (Maryam 19:31) 

This is a very powerful reminder about our approach to Salah, how we approach prayer, and how we perceive and think, and how we implement prayer in our lives. You see we supposed to pray… it’s saying as long as I am alive.

Now what is that exactly meant? It means no matter what comes up, Salah is something that will I hold on to till my last breath. I will concern myself with, till death. And the Prophet (peace be upon him) demonstrated this, he lived this. This isn’t just theory, this isn’t something just fancy to say, it’s not just a fancy slogan.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) lived it. You know, about a week before the passing of the Prophet (peace be upon him), he fell very ill. He became ill and the Prophet was incapable of standing up and even walking on his own, very soon after. So, the Prophet (peace be upon him), what he did? He would send for a couple of hid Companions to come to his home to get him, alright.

`Ubaydullah ibn `Abdullah ibn `Utbah narrated, I went to `A`ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) and asked her to describe to me the illness of Allah’s Messenger (peace be upon him). `A’ishah said, “Yes. The Prophet became seriously ill and asked whether the people had prayed. We replied, ‘No. O Allah’s Messenger! They are waiting for you.’ He added, ‘Put water for me in a trough.” `A’ishah added, “We did so. He took a bath and tried to get up but fainted. When he recovered, he again asked whether the people had prayed. We said, ‘No, they are waiting for you. O Allah’s Messenger,’ He again said, ‘Put water in a trough for me.’ He sat down and took a bath and tried to get up but fainted again. Then he recovered and said, ‘Have the people prayed?’ We replied, ‘No, they are waiting for you. O Allah’s Messenger.’ He said, ‘Put water for me in the trough.’ Then he sat down and washed himself and tried to get up but he fainted. When he recovered, he asked, ‘Have the people prayed?’ We said, ‘No, they are waiting for you. O Allah’s Messenger! The people were in the mosque waiting for the Prophet (peace be upon him) for the `Isha’ (Night) prayer. The Prophet sent for Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) to lead the people in the prayer… (Al-Bukhari)

How to Cultivate a Habit of Prayer

Many of us may ask this question: I do care about prayer, and I just want to pray the five daily prayers on time, but I have trouble doing them on time and regularly. How can I get into it?

The fact that you even care about your prayers is an incredible sign of God’s love for you and His desire to keep you close to Him! How many Muslims do you know personally who have not prayed in years and who have no desire to do so? God has honored you by placing in your heart the desire to fulfill this part of your relationship with Him. The question is: will you accept being chosen and show Him that you really care?

Praying the five daily prayers on time everyday is a good habit that just needs to be built. You’ve been building habits since you were a child and this is just another habit you need to develop and strengthen.

How do I know you’ve been habit building? Without knowing you, I’m going to give you a simple example.

Consider the call of hunger. When you were an infant and you were hungry, you’d likely call out for someone to quell the pain of your hunger. Someone in your life most likely came to help you take care of this need; they fed and nourished you, and your body, in turn, responded and began to grow.

As you developed and learned how to eat for yourself, you most likely recognized the call to hunger and developed a habitual response (i.e. eating). The type and proportions of food you ate began to impact your body; the healthy foods for your body helped nourish you and strengthened your physical and mental development.

The overindulgence of food or consistent consumption of unhealthy and junky foods likely began to deteriorate your body. Eventually, your time will pass and your soul will depart. Your body will no longer feel the need for, nor be able to respond to, the call of hunger.

The habit of eating when feeling hungry is one you developed; even if it was time consuming, you realized it was something you had to do to survive.

Let’s now consider salah (prayer). Every day, five times a day, your body, your heart and your soul, are begging you to respond to the call to prayer. For those who choose to respond to the call to prayer, you satiate your body, heart, and soul. However, just as with food, this satiation comes in different ways. Those who come to prayer with presence of heart and mind, with focus and desire to nourish and cleanse themselves spiritually, often begin to see the positive impact of their prayers on the rest of their lives.

Some others may answer the call to prayer more neglectfully, perhaps offering them on time or late, all of them or just some of them, but rushing through them mindlessly or negligently. These individuals are still nobly choosing to answer the call, yet like the junk food that can cause a body to be sick and stunt its healthy development and maintenance, this type of prayer could stunt a person’s spiritual growth, perhaps making them weak against succumbing to desires or fighting diseases of the heart and soul.

Finally, just as a dead body does not experience hunger, a spiritually dead person does not feel the need or have interest in responding to the call of prayer. The difference, however, is that while the dead body no longer has a chance to experience revitalization through food, the spiritually dead heart can be revived through prayer.

Prayer alone is not the key to a completely sound spiritual state or understanding, just as food alone is not the only component to maintain a healthy body. However, through developing a focused, centered, and meaningful habit of maintaining the five daily prayers, a person will, God willing, experience incredible benefits in this life and undoubtedly the next.

So, once we’ve recognized that salah is a healthy survival habit which one has the capability to work on maintaining throughout one’s life, the question then becomes: How?

Here are a few suggestions to perhaps get you started. Two are geared to convince and encourage your mind and heart to pray while three are specific tasks to help you begin and maintain the action of prayer.

Recognize the benefits.

Simply consider the following as a start: ”The five obligatory daily prayers, the Friday prayer followed by another Friday prayer, Ramadan followed by another Ramadan, expiate sins committed in between them as long as major sins are avoided”. (Muslim)

”The first thing the people will be accountable for on the Day of Judgment is prayer. Allah will say to His angels (even though He already knows): “Look at my servant’s prayers. Were they complete or not?” If they were complete, it will be written as complete. If they were not fully complete Allah will say: “See if my servant has voluntary prayers”. If he has them, Allah will say: “Complete his obligatory prayers shortage with his voluntary prayers.” Then the rest of his deeds will be dealt with in the same manner.” (Ahmad)

Understand Prayer as an Investment and a Refuge

Make a list of everything God has given you for which you should be grateful. Also make a list of all the hardships you or loved ones are currently facing. Then, for each of the five daily prayers, take one item off one of those lists and take it to prayer.

For an item of gratitude, allow yourself to understand that each and every prayer is an investment in what and whom you love in life being maintained and increased. As He tells us: “…If you are grateful, I will surely increase you…” (Ibrahim 14:7)

For an item of difficulty from your list, allow the heaviness of your heart and soul to pour out in every word you utter in prayer. Permit your tears of anger and anguish to release in prostration. Be certain that through this action God will undoubtedly respond to your distress. As He confirms, “Is He [not best] who responds to the desperate one when he calls upon Him and removes evil…” (An-Naml 27:62)

Make a Chart to keep track of prayers and set daily and weekly goals

Compensate yourself based on your performance. The below is an example:

Week 1: Daily Goal—Pray two prayers on time. If mess up, make up the prayer as soon as I can. Reward if meet my goal by end of the day, i.e. favorite chocolate bar. Punishment if do not reach goal, i.e. clean roommate’s bathroom. Reward if met goal everyday of the week: Movie night with best friend. Punishment if not met by end of the week: no Facebook all weekend.

Week 2: Daily Goal—Pray three prayers on time.

Continue until you’re habitually praying your five a day, on time.

Tag-Team and use technology

Building a habit often needs support. Find someone who you can text or who will text you to check in for prayers. Consider also using current technology via an app on your phone to remind you of your prayers (if you’ve used an app successfully, please share recommendations!).

Keep Going

There may be times where you feel spiritual exhilaration through prayer; your heart may feel like it’s flying, your eyes may tear up because of a closeness you experience with your Creator. Then there may be times where you feel absolutely nothing; this can make you feel like you’re doing something horribly wrong or that it’s not worth continuing because it doesn’t make you feel any different.

However, be careful not to get addicted to the ‘feeling’ by choosing only to continue praying as long as it ‘feels’ good and despairing in Allah and leaving prayer once you no longer ‘feel’ it. Praying is an obligation. Remember that you are doing this action to the best of your ability for the sake of God, not just because it makes you feel good.

While going through this journey, remember that even overindulging in healthy foods can hurt your body. In the same way, taking prayer, or any aspect of religion, to an extreme can hurt your spiritual state. Praying is not always easy.

God Almighty Himself tells us:

And seek help through patience and prayer, and indeed, it is difficult except for the humbly submissive. (The humbly submissive are those) Who are certain that they will meet their Lord and that they will return to Him. (Al-Baqarah 2:45-46)

When the going gets tough with your prayers, always remember that God has been, is, and always will be there for you.

“I am as My servant thinks I am. I am with him when he makes mention of Me. If he makes mention of Me to himself, I make mention of him to Myself; and if he makes mention of Me in an assembly, I make mention of him in an assembly better than it. And if he draws near to Me an arm’s length, I draw near to him a fathom’s length. And if he comes to Me walking, I go to him at speed.” (Hadith Qudsi)

Take that step through maintaining your five daily prayers with sincerity, focus and presence of heart. God willing, as you take a few steps, you’ll find Allah already waiting for you.

Fajr Prayer is Like a Good Investment

Some Muslims offer Fajr prayer in congregation.

No prayer is more burdensome to the hypocrites than the Fajr prayer and the `Isha’ prayer.

Why is it easy for us to wake up extra early for work, but hard for us to wake up extra early for prayer in the masjid (mosque)?

Why is it so easy to watch a movie for two hours, but so hard to pray two rak`ahs (units of Islamic prayer) before Fajr (Dawn prayer)?

Why is it that we get excited when going to a friend’s house, but feel lethargic when encouraged to go to Allah’s (Exalted is He) house when He created that friend we love so much?

Bismillah (In the name of Allah)

Dear brothers, sisters, and respected elders,

I post this with pure intentions and an optimistic attitude regarding our attendance (of our youth especially) in the masjid at Fajr time. A few sayings of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) are listed below regarding the importance of praying `Isha’ (late evening prayer) and, in particular, Fajr in the masjid (mosque). This is a beneficial reminder for myself a dozen times before it is for a single other person. That being said, I humbly request you, the reader, to invest a few short minutes to read a few potentially life-changing sentences.

`Uthman ibn `Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) reported, “I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) saying: ‘One who performs `Isha’ prayer in congregation is as if he has performed prayer for half of the night. And one who performs the Fajr prayer in congregation is as if he has performed prayer the whole night.’” (Muslim)

`Uthman ibn `Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) saying: “He who attends `Isha’ in congregation is as if he has performed prayer for half of the night; and he who attends the `Isha’ and Fajr prayers in congregation is as if he has performed prayer for the whole night.” (At-Tirmidhi)

“If they knew the merits of prayer after nightfall (`Isha’) and the morning (Fajr) prayer, they would come to them even if they had to crawl to do so.” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

“No prayer is more burdensome to the hypocrites than the Fajr prayer and the `Isha’ prayer; and if they knew their merits, they would come to them even if they had to crawl to do so.” (Al-Bukhari and Muslim)

Any businessman would tell us that this is a good investment—a good deal. Let us think about it: praying `Isha’ and Fajr in congregation in the masjid, which takes comparatively little time, earns the reward of having prayed the entire night—the entire night! Could we ask for a better deal?! Fortunately for all of us, this sale is offered every night and every morning. May Allah guide us all to take full advantage of it.

May Allah guide us to pray Fajr and `Isha’ in the masjid at least once a week. May Allah guide us to consistently encourage others to pray Fajr and `Isha’ in the masjid. May Allah give us the best relationships with each of our parents. May Allah bless us with a good understanding of Islam. May Allah give us the best character, like that of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) a mercy sent to all of mankind. And last, but definitely not least, may Allah gather us together in the highest rank in paradise.
